Word Rush

Ninety seconds. Find every word you can.

Shuffling the letters…

How to play Word Rush

A 5 by 5 grid of letters and 90 seconds on the clock. Every word you spot is points in the bank.

Drag

  • Press a letter and drag across the ones next to it.
  • Squares count as touching even diagonally.
  • Drag back over the last letter to rub it out.
  • Let go to submit the word.

Or type

  • Type the word in the box and press Enter.
  • Often the quickest way once you have spotted one.
  • It still has to be traceable on the grid.
  • Escape clears what you have picked, then pauses.

Or tap

  • Tap letters one at a time to build a word.
  • Tap the last one again to submit it.
  • Each square can only be used once per word.
  • Every tile is a button, so a keyboard works too.

How scoring works

Longer words are worth far more than several short ones — a seven-letter word beats ten three-letter words.

Anything longer than eleven letters also scores 300.

The rules of the round

  • Words must be at least 3 letters long.
  • A word of 6 letters or more counts towards your long-word total and the achievements.
  • The same word only scores once in a round.
  • A wrong guess costs you nothing but the seconds it took.
  • When the whistle blows you can see the best words you missed.

The Daily Challenge

Every day has one grid, built from the date itself, and everybody gets exactly the same letters. There is no luck in the draw — whoever scores highest simply found more on the same board.

It changes at midnight UK time, wherever you are, and is ranked separately from Classic.

Four habits that lift a score

  1. Find a word, then stretch it. If CAT is there, look for CATS, and then for SCAT. An S or an R next to a word you have already found is the cheapest points on the board.
  2. Hunt endings, not beginnings. Spot an -ING, -ERS or -EST sitting together and work backwards from it. Those three clusters hide a surprising number of six- and seven-letter words.
  3. Type the long ones. Dragging a seven-letter word across the grid takes a second or two; typing it takes less. Save the dragging for words you are still working out.
  4. Do not linger on a maybe. A rejected word costs nothing, so guess it and move on. Standing still is the only thing that really costs you.

Questions

Is Word Rush free?
Yes. No purchases, no currency, no paid hints and nothing to unlock. Everything is earned by playing.
How do letters join up?
Any two squares that touch, including diagonally. A word can wander in any direction and even double back on itself, as long as each square is used only once.
Do I have to drag?
No. You can drag across the letters, tap them one at a time, or ignore the grid entirely and type the word on a keyboard. Typed words still have to be traceable on the board.
How long is a round?
90 seconds. The clock only runs while you are playing — it pauses if you switch tabs, and you can pause it yourself at any point.
What counts as a word?
A 3-letter word or longer from our list of 56,435 English words. Names, abbreviations and hyphenated words are not in it, so neither are they on the board.
What is the Daily Challenge?
One grid a day, the same letters for everyone, built from the date itself. It changes at midnight UK time and is ranked separately from Classic.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, yes — the whole dictionary is already on your device, so nothing is checked over the internet while you play. Only the leaderboard needs a connection.
